Midi Music and Multimedia SIG

From the April 2000 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter

We had 14 people at the February meeting, where we looked at several CD-ROM multimedia programs. First we looked at ChessMaster 4000, which allows you to change the look and feel of the chess board at any time, both 2 and 3 dimensional, and there is a screen that allows you to watch the computer contemplate several thousand moves in a few seconds.

Next we looked at 2 popular Encyclopedia CDs, Compton's 1999 edition, and Microsoft's Encarta 95. Even though Compton's came on 2 CDs, we thought the Encarta was the better program, especially the music game we played where we had to determine from which country a musical instrument originated.

Next we played a demo CD made by PG Music, which shows off their line of music software products. This multimedia demo and tutorial was very informative, but the mono-tone voice of the narrator was a bit tedious.

We then played around with a few multimedia educational games and reading programs. These are geared for kids ages 2-8. A very easy and good program was the Arthur series. My 7 year old loves it at home.

The March meeting will be on scanning sheet music into a computer for editing, transposing, playing or printing. The April meeting will be on MP3 music files. The May meeting will be on cheap video cameras for your PC. Come join the fun at the Harmon Foundation, 2901 S. Harvard, on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM.
