iMacs are now shipping with options we’ve never had before. Now you can buy brand new iMacs for $999.00, $1299.00, and $1499.00. What is the difference? I’ll tell you.
- The $999 unit is the basic iMac we have all come to love only better. It runs at 350 Megahertz which means it’s now faster than any model before it. It has 64MB’s preinstalled with another slot free so you won’t necessarily have to upgrade the RAM right away. Blueberry is your only choice of flavor (color).
- The $1299 unit is called the iMac DV. It has a 400 Megahertz G3 because it uses the fast processor to process DVD video! That’s right, now you can watch DVD movies on your iMac. Not only that but you can use the firewire ports (a new high speed technology for plugging in stuff) to copy data from a digital camcorder and edit your own home movies using the included software. Without the camera, you can edit and resequence DVD movies, but WITH the camera, you can splice yourself right in or make your own Speilburg masterpiece! All the traditional flavors are available in this model.
- The $1499.00 unit is called the iMac DV Special Edition but I like to call it the Graphite iMac. All the same great features in the iMac DV but this has twice the RAM (128MB), a larger hard drive, and a really cool flavor designed to match the G4 line of computers.
The iMac DV is, in my opinion, the clear winner in choice and value. These units are shipping and stocked by many local vendors. Don’t wait to get one. Apple will always have a new product on the horizon but you won’t want to get left behind when all the DVD and iMac frenzy hits this Christmas Season.
