The Foundation Center, founded in 1956, is the most authoritative source of up-to-date information on private philanthropy in the United States; their purpose is to help grant seekers, grant makers, policymakers, the media and the general public better understand the changing field of philanthropy. The Foundation Center website (www.fdncenter.org) loaded with tutorials; answers to frequently asked questions; 'Foundation Finder,' which is a free look up tool that provides basic information on more than 61,000 private and community foundations in the U.S., and much more.

Since 1976, the Tulsa City-County Library System has been an affiliate of the Foundation Center. TCCL's foundation center collection of reference books, directories and indexes is housed on the 4th floor of Central Library. The collection includes circulating books that are mainly 'how-to's' on a variety of topics including writing proposals and fundraising. Another very powerful resource on the 4th floor is FC Search, a CD-ROM database which allows the searcher to retrieve lists of potential funders tailored to their specific project. Bring your library card and try it out!

Foundation Grants to Individuals, available in book form and a CD-ROM database, is a good resource for those seeking funding to fulfill a personal goal.

TCCL's virtual foundation center focuses on local information. To access the virtual collection go to Research Tools, click on Business & Finance and select the category The Foundation Center @ TCCL.

Almost everyday I talk to people using TCCL's foundation center collection. These individuals are rolling up their sleeves in order to find funding to improve schools, help others or fulfill a personal goal and generally strengthen our community through their hard work. If you have a dream, TCCL has the resources to help you realize it. For more information about online library services and resources call 596.7977 or visit www.tulsalibrary.org.
