Is It Only a Question of Semantics?

Recently I purchased through mail order a fairly expensive printer. When I tested it in the same manner that I test all my Epson printers, certain percentages of gray kept printing with a green cast. I tried twenty-three different combinations, and all were the same. I contacted the manufacturer and they "hemmed and hawed" enough to give me the feeling that they knew they had a problem. I then called the mail order house to inform them that I was returning the printer. The mail order house called the manufacturer for the printer, and then called me back. They informed me that the printer could not be returned because it was not defective because all these printers printed similarly. Thus the color cast was a characteristic of these printers and not a defect of this particular one.

After much needless aggravation, they took it back. And all is well that ends well. I decided to write this up because I could not get over the logic expressed by the italicized statement.
