Access

At the June M/S Access meeting we had a number of interesting discussions. A question that had come up at an earlier meeting was whether it is possible to capture data into an Access database from an internet site. Jennifer McNamara found in an article in Ziff-Davis's Inside Microsoft Access - it is available at present, but requires complicated interfaces. It will be available with Access 2000 using Data Access Pages (DAPs).

Don Singleton provided us with a solution for emailing Access data.

Charlie Birnie needed assistance in reproducing a table definition in another database, and we demonstrated using both export and import as a solution.

Seth Schwarm provided the next challenge - updating a table's AutoNumber key in a multi-user database. The group was able to provided a solution by changing the sequence of events associated with the form. We also helped Seth copy data between forms. Another problem on summing percentages on a report left the group with something to think about for our next meeting.

Richaed deJongh brought us another teaser to think about and take home with us.

We had nine enthusiastic people attend our July 5th meeting.

Charlie Birnie's first problem was that records with no data did not show on his report, and he wanted them to. We resolved this by using a right join in the underlying query, and adding criteria of "is not null." His other issue was that a form for input showed zero in a field that was not automatically overridden when data was input. The group provided him with a number of alternative solutions - changing the Data Type to Text, or changing the default from zero to null, or using the Insert key to toggle to Over-ride rather than Insert.

We then worked on Seth Schwarm's unresolved issue from our previous meeting. A total was needed on a report that was to be a sum of certain records. The total was showing all records. We were able to restrict the records in the report calculation by adding criteria to match the field on the form activating the report.

James Cozier brought in another database that we worked on with a similar issue - using parameters from one form to produce a report. We ran out of time before we had a complete solution, but we hope he'll come back again next time.

We welcome anyone that is working with M/S Access to come to our meetings. If you're having a problem with a database, put it on a diskette or zip disk, and the group will try to come up with a solution.

One participant received a raise from their employer, thanks to the additional skills and knowledge they had gained at our meetings!
