Computer Challenge

At the TCS General Meeting for July 29, we will have a Computer Trivia Contest using a program written by a member of the Atlanta PC Users Group, which displays questions, answers, and scores on the screen. The Tulsa Computer Society has a primary team consisting of Bruce Carson, Hank Gordon, and Don Greer, with Dorothy Urmston as a backup team member. We have challenged the University of Tulsa to put together a team to compete with us. Dr Bill Coberly, Chairman of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, informs me that date is bad, since many students and faculty will be off campus, but he will pursue it. We hope to run the challenge between the TCS and TU teams, but in the event that TU is unable to put a team together, I would like to ask for additional volunteers from TCS, in case we have to pit one TCS team against another.

The two teams will compete in answering computer-related trivia questions, that range from Command Line parameters, to Historical Trivia (do you know in what year ENIAC was first put in operation?) and Computers in the Movies.

When the Atlanta PC group did this challenge, the visiting team "Artificial Intelligence" was comprised of a representative from Microsoft, Lotus, and the Georgia State University Computer Science Faculty. Three members from the Atlanta Group formed the Home team "Boolean Logic".

"Artificial Intelligence" came out of the opening gate fast and won a commanding lead in Round 1. "Boolean Logic" came alive in the second Round, and then took over. The third round saw the lead switch back and forth until the final winner was determined by the last two questions. "Boolean Logic" selected and answered both final questions to win by 95 Points.

We hope a large crowd will come to the July meeting to cheer our team on to victory. If you know of some good questions we should include in the contest please forward them to djs@ionet.net, or give them to Don Singleton at an upcoming meeting. I will not be participating on a team, because I have seen some of the questions, as I reviewed the Atlanta PCUG's program to see if it would be appropriate for our meeting.
