According to a November 2000 Pew Report, The Online Health Care Revolution: How the Web Helps Americans Take Better Care of Themselves, fifty-two million American adults, or 55% of those with Internet access, have used the Web to get health or medical information and that most users go to health sites for research and reference purposes.

The Tulsa City-County Library subscribes to some excellent health databases that can serve as a starting point to those doing research on health-related issues.

Health Source: Consumer Edition can be used to find a remedy for sunburn, discover healthy nutritional guidelines or search for the latest treatments for cancer from articles in medical and consumer magazines, health newsletters, and reference books, all targeted to the lay person. Use this database to search for information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Health Source: Consumer Edition features searchable full text for over 190 journals including Prevention and Men’s Health.

Other features of Health Source include thousands of essays from Clinical Reference Systems covering adult health, behavioral health, cardiology, drug and medication information, pediatric health, senior health, women's health and sports medicine and Stedman's Medical Dictionary that provides users with access to medical terminology.

USP DI Volume II, Advice for the Patient provides patient-oriented drug information in lay language. Entries are organized into the following sections: Brand Names commonly used in both the United States and Canada, Description, Before Using This Medicine, Proper Use of This Medicine, Precautions, and Side Effects. Also included are pronunciations of drugs and special considerations such as age, allergies, pregnancy, and breast-feeding.

Well-Connected is a library of reports on common diseases and wellness issues. Each report is an in-depth discussion of the latest information on treatments, risk factors, causes, diagnostic tests, and preventative measures. Topics include glaucoma, sickle-cell anemia, hepatitis (all strains), insomnia, strokes and more! All reports are written by experienced medical writers and reviewed for accuracy and relevancy by a board of physicians at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. The Research Center also subscribes to the print version of Well-Connected.

Health Source and USP DI are both available at all libraries in the system and from home while Well-Connected is available for in-library use only at the Central Library.
