Access Sig

We had a small meeting on January 4 - just 5 of us. We used the Tools...Addins...Database splitter on Charlie Birnie's Church database, and it worked very well - extremely fast on Bruce Carson's new laptop. If this doesn't work on your machine, you may have to re-install Access and make sure you do the "Custom" install rather than the "Typical" install. That created front end/ back end databases. If the data database is moved to a different directory, then the Tools...Addins...Linked Table Manager can be used to reattach the data databases automatically.

Jennifer McNamara showed everyone how to make sure their PC's will always show four-character years by doing Start...Settings...Control Panel...Regional settings...Date...and changing the combo Box from the way Windows 98 installs as M/d/yy to mm/dd/yyyy. By also using the Mask wizard (also available with a "Custom" install) in a database date field, and adding a couple of zeros to the year, developers can require that users always key in all four digits of the year. We also wrote a little bit of VB code to validate an input field on a form.

John Beams was curious as to where a list of all the Access functions was. We found them in Help, by doing a search on Functions. They also show up when using the Expression builder. Activate the expression builder by right clicking on a field or criteria in a query and click Build. Double clicks Functions, then click Built in Functions. All the available functions then appear in the right pane of the dialog box.

We finished early as there were some people who wanted to go home and watch the Sugar Bowl!
