Financial Information on the Net was the topic for the September 29 meeting of the Internet Special Interest Group. We demonstrated a number of services, particularly one called Quote Ticker Bar (QTB). At the time I indicated that 16 bit and 32 bit versions were available, so it should run on both Win 3.1 and Win 95 with any Internet Service Provider. I was wrong. It turns out that America OnLine (AoL), in their wisdom, distribute only a 16 bit version of WinSock with the Windows 95 version of their software, and the WinSock interface is required for QTB to work. The procedure that should work is connecting to AoL with their normal software, then minimize AoL, and bring up QTB. The normal 32 bit version (Version 4) of QTB does not see a 32 bit Winsock, so it attempts to dial to connect to the net (even though you are already connected). The 16 bit version of QTB (version 2.5) won't work either. Since it is designed to work with windows 3.1, it expects the Win32s 32 bit "simulator" that 3.1 programs used to do limited 32 bit functions, and of course that is not available in Windows 95 (if you are the real thing, why also provide a simulator). The AoL support is neither Fish nor Fowl (although some AoL subscribers might think it is "foul") so it does not work with AoL. Sorry about that. AoL Subscribers need to tell AoL it better get working on a 32 bit WinSock immediately.
