Free Internet Services Ending

From the January 2001 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter

Originally this was just an editors note in the January Deals Column, but as I learned that others were disappearing as well, I decided to expand on it.

Spinway.com, the Internet Service Provider used by KMart's BlueLight free internet service, closed their doors on Friday, December 1. In order to keep BlueLight.com's more than five million Internet service subscribers online and to continue to provide Internet service to people everywhere, BlueLight has acquired select assets of Spinway. As I understand it, AltaVista is also ending their free internet service, and I would not be surprised to see others shut down in the next few months. It is very expensive to be able to offer free internet services, and the revenue from the small adds that they made you look at while using the service, was just not enough to keep most of these services in business.

Some may survive, at least for a while, but all are faced by the same economic fact of life - TANSTAAFL (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch).
