The TCS General meeting met at CompUSA at 7:00. The meeting started with an
introduction of Portable programs, or those that can be run on a thumb drive.
Richard Hall installed Portable Firefox, Portable NVU and Portable Sunbird on
his thumb drive. It took a little time for the programs to install on the drive,
so Don Greer reluctantly demoed Portable Firefox on his thumb drive. The group
discussed the advantages of having a portable web browser such as checking web
mail while away from a home computer. Mike Sheehan had to discuss how he could
carry a number of portable programs on his 4GB thumb drive.
Richard could not import his URLs from IE to his thumb drive where Portable
Firefox was loaded but that was the only problem the group encountered. He
demoed Portable NVU, a web page editor. He also demoed Portable Sunbird, a
calendar program. The group looked at Portable Open Office, but did not install
it because of its size.
Richard discussed e-mail lists such as Kim Komando's list and Fred Langa's list.
Richie Shroff demoed Google Maps and how his radio club had mapped its repeaters
at http://www.w5ias.com/ with Google scripts.
The group discussed future meetings and agreed to help upgrade a computer at the
next meeting.
