Midi Music and Multimedia SIG

We had 13 people at the May meeting, where we took a look at various high-end notation software packages. Actually, we looked at about a dozen notation packages, ranging in prices from $15 to $600, and everywhere in between. I put together a handout listing the notation software titles and how much they cost - both list price and street price - and where to go on the internet for more information or to download a free demo. I also handed out several brochures from some of the notation software vendors. Some of the brochures even had a CD with a demo copy of the software, or a multimedia sales pitch.

We started off by watching portions of 3 different multimedia demonstrations of how to use notation software. These worked like tutorials, showing how easy it is to compose music on your computer. They demonstrated how to set up the manuscript page, the number and types of staves, the key, clef, time signature and more. Once you have the score laid out, it's easy to enter the notes onto the screen. You can either point and click them using your mouse, use the computer keyboard, or play them in with a music keyboard. The notes show up as fast as you enter them in.

We then went into Band in a Box and created a simple song with a melody and soloist. We limited the song to only 32 measures to keep it small, then saved it as a standard MIDI file. We then went into each of the notation programs and opened the MIDI file and watched how it was notated by that program. Some did better than others, but most of them did a pretty good job.

The SIG will break for summer and not meet during June, July, and August. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 21, at 7:00 pm at the Harmon Foundation, 2901 S. Harvard. Hope to see you all there.
