In August 20, 1999 APCUG announced a New Internet Service called WebBoard. As the announcement indicated APCUG member User Groups were invited to check out how TCS was using it, because since I am the Online Services Committee Chairman and WebMaster for APCUG, TCS was the first Beta Test site for WebBoard.
In August 2001 the APCUG web servers were hit with either the Code Red Worm and/or the lesser-known NT Shutdown Worm. We were able to get the APCUG hosted Web Sites (including the Tulsa Computer Society website) back up right away, but getting WebBoard back up was much more difficult.
It was not that we did not try, in fact I tried just about everything I could think of to get it installed on the new HP server which APCUG used, including asking just about everyone I could find to help me figure out how to get a SqlServer7 database installed on the APCUG Tulsa1 server, but we just could not get it figured out. I used Symantec Ghost to transfer the files from the old SCSI drive which was about to fail, to a brand new 40gig IDE drive, and used the internal way of accessing a web server (http://127.0.0.1) and voila, I was able to read year old messages on the server. So I approached the APCUG Board of Directors and asked to be able to build a new server to host the WebBoard service. I got a lot of static about that request, but I was finally permitted to build a new server, and once I got it built thanks to the efforts of John Pearce, Joe Nuvolini, and Dave Hughes (an ISP in Colorado) we were able to get WebBoard back in operation
I invite everyone to check out both the APCUG WebBoard and the TCS WebBoard.
