We had 12 people at the April meeting, where we took a look at PowerTracks Pro Audio 5.0 by PGMusic. These are the same guys that make Band-in-a-Box. PowerTracks Pro Audio is a MIDI Sequencer and Digital Recording studio for only $29, which makes it one of the best bargains around. (see a review of PowerTracks Pro Audio in this issue of the I/O Port)

Using a small music keyboard, we played in a few simple tunes to create our own song. We started by using the Drum Grid Editor to build a drum track, then added a bass guitar, then strings, then a melody. Each track we added was layered on top of the previous one to make a rich sounding song. We then played around with the mixer to add chorus & reverb, and place instrument sounds to the right or left speaker to create stereo effect. Next we used editing features to quantize the notes, or correct their timing, and to transpose a section of the song to a new key. Finally, we used a microphone to record someone singing along with the song, then we added reverb and other effects to the digital audio to make it sound professional. It's a lot of fun making a song with a group of people.

At the May 18th meeting we will take a look at various high-end Notation Software packages. The SIG will break for summer and not meet during June, July, and August. Come on out and join the fun at the Harmon Foundation, 2901 S. Harvard, on the third Tuesday of each month (except summer) at 7:00 PM.
