After avoiding WordPerfect 8 for several months because of so many crashes, I finally called Corel to get some help. After explaining my problem the tech suggested that it was probably a conflict with other programs that were caused by Windows 98 and suggested I download "Libraries Update" from the Microsoft web site. It worked and all my problems with WordPerfect 8 seem to be solved.
