Cable Modem

From the March 2000 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter
Southwestern Bell did not seem to be doing anything to set up a wire center
near my house, so that I could get ADSL so I signed up for Cable Modem
service. If a lot of people in my neighborhood should sign up for Cable
Modem service, my response time could be affected, but right now my
system seems to be faster than other computers that have ADSL, and Cable
Modem just costs $19 a month for the first three months, and then $39 a month
after that, while ADSL costs $49 ($39 for ADSL, plus $10 for the Internet
Service). If you are right across the street from a wire center, ADSL
may be the better bet, because it will always provide 1.5mb throughput, but
if one is anywhere close to the 3.4 mile limit, that response will be as
low as 384kb, and I would expect Cable Modems will be much faster than that
for a long time (right now, being the only one in my area on Cable Modem,
I have over 2mbps throughput. If you are interested in knowing more about
cable modems, drop me an email at djs@ionet.net and I will let you know
what you need to do to check for availability in your area.
