Refurbishing Computers

At the January 22 meeting Jerry Custer, Glenn Fetter, Donna Smith, Bruce Bostian, Leon Suter, Steven Witt, Gary Ludwig, and I processed several donations that came in as a result of an article in Action Line in the Tulsa World for January 19 and worked to select a computer that Melynda Stone, P.A.L. Program Coordinator for the Rogers County Volunteers for Youth could use. Unfortunately none of the machines we had in our "Shipping Department" had CD-Roms, so we had to ask Melynda to come back the next week and bring the CDs for software she wanted installed on the machine we were donating to her program, so that we could install them for her using a special technique we have of copying programs from a CD on one machine, over a parallel "Interlink" cable, to a machine without a CD.

We had to cancel the January 29 meeting because of the snow. I called Brian on Friday and he said driving was treacherous even then, and once the slush froze that night, it would be too dangerous to have a meeting, I posted the cancellation on the ok.general and ok.tulsa.general newsgroups and on the TCS Web Page, and called Melynda Stone and told her to wait until Feb 5 to bring her CDs; I hope no one missed the notice and drove all the way to Bethesda Boys Ranch. In the future if there is any question, please check the http://www.tcs.org web page to see if a meeting has been cancelled because of the weather.

Gary Ludwig was not going to be able to be with us on Feb 5, but he was kind enough to come in during the week and insert a cd he found in the machine we had earmarked to give to Melynda's project.

At the February 5 meeting Jerry Custer, James Kirkpatrick, Johnny Isaacs, Scott Carrerron, and I checked out the system we were donating to Melynda Stone's PAL project for the Rogers County Volunteer for Youth, installing some software to prove the CD Gary found for her worked, and then we went through our available printers to find one for her. The first was missing a paper tray, but we found a donated Apple Laser printer that we were able to get to work on her system, so she left a very happy lady. We also inserted a 1 gig drive in a machine that was donated to Bethesda Boys Ranch, and that machine will be used in their BBR Graphics program where they teach boys in their program Silk Screening.
