We had 4 people show up for the January meeting. We looked at various multimedia CD-ROM programs and games. First we looked at a children's game called Dr. Seuss Kindergarten, which was awarded one of the best software titles for Kindergartners in 1998. Its amazing how much stuff they can fit onto a single CD-ROM. It has over 250 lessons, includes 50 of the Dr. Seuss characters, and has several original songs.

Next we looked at a multimedia demo program by AudioTrix Pro, which took us from the days of early gaming sounds with the PC speaker, to FM sound cards, to Wave-table cards, to digital audio sound. It was very interesting, and I can remember each of these events and playing many of the games that were quickly reviewed. We then took a look at Dangerous Creatures, by Microsoft, which shows several animals in the wild with small movie clips and several facts about each one. We ended up by looking at Encarta and other multimedia encyclopedias. Again, it is amazing how much information, including sounds and movie clips, that can be stored on a single CD-ROM.

Our February meeting will be a presentation of the new Band-in-a-Box version 8, which has over 80 new features, including Automatic Soloing and Automatic Song Maker. The March meeting is going to be on creating and presenting your own multimedia presentation using PowerPoint 97. The April meeting will be on PowerTracks Pro version 5, a MIDI Sequencing and Digital Recording package for only $29. Come on out and join the fun at the Harmon Foundation, 2901 S. Harvard, on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM.
