General Meeting

The meeting started with an exploration of Google Maps, http://maps.google.com. Members took turns searching by zip code and zooming in on landmarks in the city. The group explored aerial photos of the maps as well.

Doug, one of the members, told the group of a problem he had. He said that he thought he had picked up a worm though an e-mail attachment. He said that he had noticed a file in the Windows Task Manager that had not been there before - ILE.exe. The members used a search engine to scan for the file and found that it was probably the Bagle worm or a variant. The group searched for tools that would remove the worm and found two that may work: http://www.bitdefender.com/html/virusinfo.php?menu_id=1&v_id=330# and http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html

The group discussed how to scan for viruses since the worm had disabled the antivirus program on the computer. The group found a site that rated and compared antivirus programs and explored the site: http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?table

Richard made Doug a CD that contained some freeware security tools: a firewall, a virus scanner, the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tool, and the latest version of Firefox.

The group discussed future topics for TCS General Meetings:
