June Will Be Busy

From the May 1999 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter
There is going to be an intense, round-the-clock workshop covering
hypertexts and hypertext tools (web based and others) on May 28-June 2,
1999 in Denver Colorado called the Cybermountain Workshop.
An ambitious international teleconference, using software called MOO will
take place from 3 to 6 pm, Greenwich Mean Time, Wednesday June 2, 1999,
starting with a keynote MOO talk by Stuart Moulthrop. They originally said
that would be 9:00 am to noon Tulsa Time, but I believe they failed to take
Daylight Savings Tim into consideration, and that it really will be 10:00am
- 1:00pm Tulsa Time. Regardless the Tulsa Computer Society plans to hold a
meeting beginning at 9:00 which will cover this teleconference; tentatively
that meeting will be in room M1 of Keplinger Hall, 5th and Harvard, but I
have not yet gotten a final confirmation on the date so check next month's
paper or the web site to be sure. We would invite you to join us for the
meeting, or if you prefer you can join the meeting from home, using the
links on http://www.tcs.org/webpage9.htm#MOO.
There will be several "discussions" going on at the same time, in what MOO
calls "rooms".
Library to discuss:
- Why are there hypertexts--what does hypertext provide that we can't
get elsewhere?
- Where are the hypertexts--what can we do to promote hypertexts?
- How do readers interact with hypertexts?
- Where are the readers--what do we need to do to promote reading?
- Can authors trick readers into reading their works when the don't
know how to read hypertexts?
Business meeting room to think about:
- What practical steps can we take to ensure hypermedia systems
provide functionality, usability, and content?
- What can we do to promote hypertext systems?
- What role should formal design methods play in developing
hypertexts?
- How do we provide systems which combine a user-centered focus of
development with an author-centered focus of system development?
Conference room where researchers, writers, and developers can determine
design approaches:
- What can system designers and web engineers learn from hypertext
authors?
- What can hypertext authors learn from web engineers and system
designers?
- Is there a gap in functionality expected by authors and that
provided by system developers?
- How does the system developers perspective of hypermedia affect the
hypertexts which are created using that system? (i.e., not just "messenger
morphs the media", but "system developer morphs the media").
- To what extent can authors warp and change the design to craft their
messages?
- To what extent is crafting the message compatible with a design
process?
- To what extent does the message change to meet the requirements of
the design?
Studio to identify what is currently available and how to improve it:
- How do different authors use systems and what kinds of new
functionality could be added to existing systems?
- What authoring softwares are currently available, and what is on the
drawing table.
- What strategies / approaches / techniques work? How and why do they
work?
- How can we promote and use co-operative authoring?
- How can we share information on tools & resources for content and
systems developers (e.g., strategies / approaches / techniques).
Theater where people can put on an improvisational hyperterxt play.
Bar for people to just hang out
If you want to practice using MOO, there will be 5 opportunities. You can
do your own GMT -> Tulsa Time conversions if you wish, perhaps aided by
http://time.greenwich2000.com/info/timezone-summer.htm but I believe the
times I show are the correct Tulsa Times
| Saturday April 17 at midnight GMT | 7 pm Tulsa Time |
| Saturday May 1 at noon GMT | 7 am Tulsa Time |
