Viruses

From the May 1999 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter
There are a couple of mentions in this issue about the happy99 virus, which
we covered last month, and I also want to call to your attention the Melissa
Virus, which we have 9 links about in the Tulsa Computer Society's
http://www.tcs.org/software.htm#VIRUS list. As I understand, they have
caught the guy who started Melissa, at least in the US, but you should still
be careful about it, because many many people may have their computers
infected with Melissa, especially people that exchange Microsoft Word files.
We always try to stay on the top of virus information, both warning people
about them at meetings, putting up links in the
http://www.tcs.org/software.htm#VIRUS listing, etc.
Some viruses are real, and we try to report them whenever we can verify the
reports. Some have some basis, but are not as bad as people say, there is a
report on a scam that people treat like virus reports on that in this issue,
and some are not valid at all, and http://www.tcs.org/software.htm#VIRUS has
a number of links with Virus Hoax information as well.
If you get a virus report, I suggest you check
http://www.tcs.org/software.htm#VIRUS about it first, to see if it is either
true, or covered in one of the Virux Hoax web sites, before passing it on to
others you know.
