Midi Music and Multimedia Sig Report

We had 12 people come out to the October meeting, which is a pretty good turnout. This month's meeting was about music accompaniment software packages, which is apparently a hot item for everyone. We talked about Band- in-a-Box, Jammer Professional, DoReMiX, and Visual Arranger. I was able to get demo versions of all but the Visual Arranger software, so we were able to look at each package and compare them side by side. I also had handout material on each package, listing each one's features and pricing information. We spent the most time reviewing Jammer Professional, since I happened to know more about that package than the others. We created our own song from scratch using the jazz swing styles, with a 4-bar intro, 3 12-bar verses, and a 6-bar ending. Each section of the song had a distinct "style", so there was some variations throughout the song. This helps to make the song more interesting and less "computerized". Of course, today's programs have random note generation algorithms built in to help add a less mechanized feel. (See review of Jammer Professional elsewhere in this issue for more info.)
At the November meeting we will review various educational software packages for music. This is a good time to check out what's available to teach your kids about music, or how to play the piano. At December's meeting we will once again have a presentation on Digital Cameras, where you can have your picture taken and put on a floppy diskette. We will also have a scanner and a printer set up, so you can digitize your existing photographs and touch them up and re-print them, too. Come join the fun at the Harmon Foundation, 2901 S. Harvard, on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM.
