From the November, 2004 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter

  1. Book Review by Phil Ansteth - "In the Beginning was the Command Line," by Neal Stephenson

Phil reviewed the book highlighting connections between the Linux command line and auto sales, politics, religion and cosmology. He showed how the use of the Linux command line is superior to the GUI interface to do productive work.

  2. Google Desktop

Richard discussed the new Google Desktop search engine and how to download and use the program. He talked about some reviews of the program but also how it can be a privacy risk.

  3. The Open CD

Richard distributed copies of the CD and challenged the members to examine and possibly install some of the programs that had been ported from Linux. He also demoed how to burn the CD ISO image to disk.

The members discussed their experiences with the Windows XP SP2 patch. One member told the group that the patch would not install on her computer, possibly because of a spyware conflict.

  4. Next meeting

The members wanted to discuss the Open CD programs as well as how to combat spyware at the November 30, 2004 General meeting.
