TCS - NT Sig Report

NT Sig Report

From the August 1997 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter

The NT Sig is changing its name to the NT/BackOffice Sig (or NT/BOS for short) to more accurately reflect the overall focus of the group as well as open up an increased breadth of meeting topics.

Group members are encouraged to solicit approval from their employers to have NT/BOS meetings at their business locations; this will allow us to experience NT/BO in "real world" scenarios as well as add to the interest of the meetings. NOTE: These "off-site" meetings will be scheduled as much in advance as possible. Every effort will be made to confirm the meeting location in the IO Port newsletter. If necessary, BOS members will be contacted by e-mail (thru the mail list, see below) at least 2 days prior to the meeting to confirm any potential changes. The "default" location will continue to be the library.

A nenber will try to get his employer to host the July meeting, if so, the topic will be his installation (and a demonstration) of MS Exchange Server v5.0 as well as viewing of a video from Tech Ed 97. In lieu of that, we will have the meeting at the library with the video (if possible) and a presentation on IIS and Site server by Van.

A web page has been created on the TCS Web Page for this group. It's address is http://www.tcs.org/ntsig.htm. It will be updated with last minute changes in meeting location, so members are encouraged to check it before leaving for a meeting. This page also contains a link to another web page at http://www.mensum.com/ntsig which hosts an on-line discussion forum called NT/BackOffice Discussion, where members can carry on discussions on various topics related to NT and BackOffice.

A mailing list has been created to help the members know where meetings are, and to spread other information needed by the NT/BOS To join this mailing list send an email message to "ntsig-request@screamer.mensum.com" and in the body of the message write "SUBSCRIBE ntsig emailaddress", without the double quote marks, and where you replace emailaddress with your own email address. For example I would send the message "SUBSCRIBE ntsig djs@ionet.net"

The following topics are being considered for future meetings:

* Internet Information Server and Site Server overview

* Domain issues: PDC/BDC/SA server setup, domain models and concepts, "joining" vs participating in a domain

* The "MS Way"; how to effectively employ user accounts and groups, especially in a domain context

* Access security: user permissions and rights, common security mistakes, NTFS local security, local vs network access

* Performance monitoring: how to setup and administer

* Others: RAID, NetWare interop, browsing and share admin

NT/BOS membership status update

Since some of the off-site visits may require presenting a list of expected attendees to a company's Security Office prior to the night of the meeting, we are encouraging all interested parties to "enroll" in NT/BOS. An enrolled member is one that:

(1) is an active member in the Tulsa Computer Society, so that they will receive the I/O Port Newsletter by mail, with meeting announcements.

(2) is committed to being a regular attender/participator (by attending 2 or more consecutive NT/BOS meetings) and

(3) has (and uses!) internet-based e-mail capability in order to join our "mailing list".

Enrolled members can avoid missing meetings (due to possible changes in location) as well as participate in other information sharing activities. Incorporating this membership requirement will enhance our group's ability to provide interesting and meaningful programs as well as provide additional opportunities for information sharing (which is what user groups are all about). Note: Although our intent is not to be exclusive, due to security requirements at some of our "off-site" locations, attendance at some meetings may need to be restricted to "members only".
