The second TCS General Meeting was held at CompUSA on September 30, 2003. About 12 members were present to set up the new Luggie Jr. that was assembled at the August meeting. Before the setup started, Richard Hall talked about recent security issues and privacy invasions. He told the members to:
  1. install operating system updates regularly

  2. use a router and software firewalls, especially for high-speed connections

  3. use anti-virus software

He told the story of a friend who had no firewall and had let an anti-virus software subscription expire on a DSL account - a recipe for trouble.

Richard distributed new Morphix and Knoppix bootable Linux CDs. Members traded him blank CDs for the programs that do not install to the hard disk, but load and run in memory.

The members discussed partitioning the Luggie Jr. hard drive to make a data partition on d: for easy data backups. The group discussed setting up user accounts with an administrator - do not name it admin, and user accounts with limited rights for security. The group set up e-mail accounts for Luggie Jr. and imported an address book and bookmarks. The group discussed BIOS upgrades but Richard warned against the upgrade unless there was a specific need. Finally, the group installed some desktop icons for computer management, startup configuration and a calculator.

In the attached pictures, Richard completes the hardware setup and gets advice from Carl Mayrath before the meeting. Photos are by Don Greer.
