Daytimers

Prepared by Shirrell Davis

From the October 1998 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter

At the August 12 Daytimers meeting we were happy to see Bruce Carson in the audience. He has been gone for way too long.

Questions that were covered:

Hard drives - which manufacturer is best? How do you move things from one drive to another?

Java - How do you know which version you have? What is the difference between Java Applets and Applications. How does Java work?

Many manufacturers make available interim releases of programs, which you can either download, or which they will send to you for a small fee. How do you know which interim version of the software you have?

Is there any reason not to get rid of "temp" files?

Discussed the forms that were available for the Philips Speech Products softward demoed at the General Meeting. Compared Philips product to the product available with a version of Word Perfect 8.

Plug-ins. How do they work, where do you get them?

Interesting Web Sites; military reunion sites to be covered by a program at the Hardesty Library.

Recordable CDs -- different types. Writeable CDs must be completely rewritten, hence they are good for small scale publishing, but not for updating random files.

Wealth of information on the net -- boggles the mind. Ideal for doing research, whether by grade school, hich school, college, or grad student, or for business or pleasure. Discussed Microsoft Terraserver with photos from space covering many parts of the US -- Ok City is covered, but at last check, Tulsa was not.
