If you have Win98 installed on a LapTop, could you bring it to a meeting so we can test it. Here is what I was told by another Director of APCUG. "I have been around the block a few times on this one. 98 doesn't set the refresh rate, it just screws up the driver that does. Go to control panel, system, device manager, diaplay adapter,......,properties, driver and refresh it. If that doesn't work reinstall it."
Another person indicated "my notebook is a Winbook XL266 (the cheap one with the dual scan monitor). When set to 640x480, the only refresh rate that is available is 60 Hz. This appears to be true whether the LCD screen or an external monitor is connected to the device. I have used it with a Proxima LCD projector, and under Windows 98.
When my desktop is set to 640x480, the lowest refresh available under Windows 98 is 72 Hz. It does permit a refresh rate of 60Hz at 800x600. I don't have the display adapter's manual handy, but the box for a similar display adapted lists the supported vertical refresh rates at 640x480 to be 120 Hz for anything less than 64K colors and 100 Hz for 16.7million colors. I have used this computer with a Proxima projector, but probably not with this video display adapter, since it is a new one, and also not under Windows 98. My old adapter was a Diamond Stealth 64 which supported 60 Hz at 640x480.
The problem may therefore be a hardware problem and not limited to notebook computers. I don't know whether a different driver might allow an adapter to run at a lower refresh rate. I suggest that anyone intending to use your projector check their available refresh rates before the meeting."
We clearly need to get to the bottom of this matter, so that we will know what to advise speakers, because we do not want a repeat of the problems we had with the Viagrafx presentation. I am happy that Tammie Kolker was able to improvise and come up with a very good presentation despite the problems.
