Quick Verse 4.0

From the January 1997 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter

I have looked at a number of different Bible Study tools, and in my opinion QuickVerse 4.0 for Windows from Parsons Technologies is absolutely the best.

With QuickVerse for Windows, one can select several versions of the Bible, including KJV (King James Version), NKJV (New King James), NIV (New International), NRSV (New Revised Standard), NASB (New American Standard), HG (Strong's Concordance), NNAS (NAS 1995 Edition), and NASC (NAS Concordance).. One can have the different versions tiled so they are all visible at the same time, and Syncronize them, so that as one moves the elevator bar on one version, the other versions track the movement.

For example, if we look at 1st Timothy 6:10, we see that in KJV it reads: "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows" while in NIV the same verse reads: "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs" and in NASB it reads "For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang" If we look at Strongs for that verse we see "10 . . philarguria:G5365 . philarguria:G5365 . . rhiza:G4491 . pas:G3956 kakos:G2556 hos:G3739 . tis:G5100 oregomai:G3713 . . . apoplanao:G635 . . pistis:G4102 . peripeiro:G4044 heautou:G1438 peripeiro:G4044 . polus:G4183 odune:G3601 ". If you click a word in Strongs, the correspondending word in KJV is highlighted, and if you click a word in KJV, the corresponding word in Strongs is highlighted. From this we can tell that "sorrows" comes from odune:G3601, and if we look that up in HG.DCT we get "3601. odune, od-oo'-nay; from G1416; grief (as dejecting):--sorrow" and if we click on the referenced G1416 we get "1416. duno, doo'-no; or dumi, doo'-mee; prol. forms of an obs. prim. duo, doo'-o (to sink); to go "down":--set."

QuickVerse also includes a PC Bible Atlas, with maps such as the First Century Christian Churches:

There are also a large number of articles, such as Timothy and Silas Join Paul in Corinth "During this time Paul had been anxiously waiting for Timothy's return and for news of the situation in Thessalonica. Perhaps discouraged, he left Athens and traveled to Corinth, a very busy commercial center in the province of Achaia. Some time later Timothy and Silas joined Paul in Corinth. Luke identifies the proconsul in Corinth as Gallio. According to an inscription, Gallio served as proconsul of the province of Achaia beginning in the year 51 (possibly 52), and thus Paul's second missionary journey can be dated with relative precision as covering the years 50-52 (it began no earlier than 49 and it ended no later than 53), that is, when Paul was in his early 40s. Acts 18:1-18 "

In reading these articles a number of words are highlighted, such as Thessolonica. If one double clicks on that word, one get "Thessalonica [THES-uh-lah-NIE-kuh] The chief city and principal port of Macedonia, located on the Egnatian Way, at the N tip of the Thermaic Gulf. The city was given its freedom for its support of Antony and Octavian during the civil war that followed Julius Caesar's death. This gave the city the right to self-government, among other things. The officials of the city Luke calls "politarchs" in the original text, a term historians once thought to be in error has since been confirmed as a common title for magistrates throughout Macedonia. Modern Salonica. Acts 17:1; Acts 17:13; Acts 20:4; Phil 4:16 "

Some words are highlighted there as well, and if one clicks on Macedonia, one gets "Macedonia [MAS-uh-DOH-nee-uh] A Greek kingdom established as early as the 7th century B.C. Under Philip II of Macedon (359-336 B.C.), the mountain tribes of Macedonia were unified and exercised dominion over the whole of mainland Greece. His son, Alexander the Great, overthrew Persia and founded the largest Near Eastern empire then known, which maintained dynastic rule throughout the E Mediterranean until the rise of Roman power. Macedonia was made a Roman province in 148 B.C. In NT times, it extended from the Aegean Sea to the Adriatic, N of the province of Achaia and SW of Thrace. It was crossed from W to E by the great Egnatian Way. Thessalonica was its capital. Acts 16:9-12; Acts 19:21-29; 2 Cor 7:5; 1 Th 1:7-8 "

You can do simple or complex searches, such as John AND James NOT brother, to look for John and James but not the word brother, or Jesus ANDWITHIN2 son of man, to find verses containing references to Jesus that are within two verses of references to son of man.

You can add personal commentary to your electronic Bible, you can search for words and phrases in your notes, you can highlight text, find text that you have highlighted, and add cross references.

I highly recommend Quick Verse 4.0 for Windows.
