Is a Resource Center Possible?

At the Representative Council Meeting last night it appears everyone came with similar ideas for improving the Tulsa Computer Society. One revolved around the idea of having the club purchase some new computer that could be used at meetings, that would be more powerful that either Bruce's laptop or my luggable. We could purchase a laptop for around $4,000 that would do the job, however we could get a desktop machine like the luggable for about half that. The problem with the latter solution is that desktop machines are really not built to be carried around every day. A laptop would stand up to being carried around a lot better, but we would still be faced with the task of bringing it and the projection equipment in to the meeting, and then back out to the car at the end of the meeting.

I mentioned the desperate need we have for a new place to work on the Computer Refurbishing Project (see article on the front page of this issue), and told the council that the best of both worlds would be if we could find some permanent space that we could set up the Refurbishing Computers project in one area, and about 30 to 50 chairs in another area, such that we were the only ones that used the space, and it could be locked up when we left. In such a situation we could afford to leave the projection equipment and a desktop computer permanently set up, and have most of our Sig Meetings in that room. For the General Meeting, and perhaps one or two really large Sigs, we might still have to meet at TU, but we would only have to take the projection equipment and computer down for those meetings, and it could be left up the rest of the time.

The question is where can we find space for such a Resource Center? We would need sufficient parking around it, and it would need to be in a fairly decent part of town. If we need to rent space in some commercial building, how can we afford it? Should we raise dues, or is there some other way to raise the funds? If you have any ideas along these lines, please send me email at djs@ionet.net, or give me a call at 622-3417.
