Another way

A friend of mine bought a new computer and wants to give it to his sister-in-law. He wanted me to delete everything and start all over.

As I looked at a blank screen, showing only command.com, I planned an attack. First I installed the drivers for my BackPack external CD-ROM drive. Then I installed Windows95 from his CD.

I noted the computer had a 28.8 modem card, so I decided to set up internet. I set up a connection with my internet provider, Rapidfire. I wanted to download the latest version of Netscape. But the problem is, you have to have a browser installed before you can get a browser.

I decided to use FTP to get Netscape. I installed WS-FTP. (The complete program will fit on a floppy.) I tried about 10 places and couldn't find it. At the TPS meeting I asked if anyone knew where I could find it. I hate to admit my stupidity but Don Singleton suggested I try ftp.netscape.com.

At 9:30 PM, the busyest time to get on the internet, I got the full version of Netscape in about an hour. No questions, asking for passwords, family history, etc.

Netscape Communicator 4.5 has a few new goodies. The one I like best, when one sends an e-mail message, there is an option to get a return receipt.

I think I'll put FTP to use more often.
