Members Help
But More Are Needed

From the September 1998 issue of the I/O Port Newsletter

In the August I/O Port I made a plea for people to help in many different areas in the Tulsa Computer Society, and I am very pleased to announce that several stepped forward to help. James Keith has agreed to take over maintenance of our membership directory (you can reach Jim at 251-9517, or on his cell phone at 625-2420). Roger Petty has agreed to help me with the I/O Port (layout, paste up, converting to HTML for publication on the web, etc), and Nev Cox volunteered to help with I/O Port advertising. Docia McCloud has agreed to take over the Word Processing / DTP SIG. These are all very wonderful people, and I deeply appreciate the assistance that each will provide.

We still have many opportunities for people to help. I can't believe that I am the only one in TCS that can teach a Getting Started session; if there is no one who will agree to take them over, is there anyone who would agree to present specific programs? What about programs for other meetings, such as Windows? Have you bought some new program that you think people might like to see, and would you be willing for us to schedule a Windows Sig meeting around a presentation of that program? What about some of the other Sig Meetings? If you would not be willing to take over all responsibility for a Sig, would you be willing to serve as Assistant Sig Leader, and help me find programs for the sig, or would you at least be willing to put on a program once in a while? Do you have an idea for something that you think might be a good subject for a new Special Interest Group (and if so would you be willing to lead it?)

Two weekends a month are all I can afford to spend with Computer Refurbishing, but Fermin Olivera from Belize is at the Bethesda Boys Ranch for a while, working in the Greenhouse, and attending school, and he is interested in learning more about computer repair to take back to Belize so that he and Jim Erwin can get a similar program going there to teach disadvantaged young people. Do we have any members with hardware experience that could join us on the two Saturdays I can be there, or perhaps join Fermin on the Saturdays I am not available, and help get computers repaired and at the same time show Fermin how it is done? Do we have any members with experience in TV Repair who would be willing to take a look at some of the monitors we have which do not work?

I still need more help distributing I/O Ports to stores. One distributor who had been doing a good job distributing to P C Tech (8421-B E 68th), Computer Link (6111 G S Mingo), DataLinks Electronics (8 S 111 E Ave), Affiliated Electronics (8290 E 41St), and Gardner's Book Store (4421 S Mingo) will no longer be able to do it, so I need someone to pick up those stores, and also surely there are other stores in your area that do not carry the I/O Port, and that you could take a few bundles to. I almost always have plenty of bundles in my car, or you can call our Distribution Coordinator Lois Watkins at 665-0726 and ask her to put you on her list, and when I call her to tell her a new issue is in, she can call you and you can stop by my house at 3311 South 127 East Place (take 129th to 34th street, turn west, come in two blocks, turn right, and it is the third house on the right), and you can pick up bundles from my garage.
