Install image to a new drive

For more information on an image, read the file !README.TXT in each folder in IMAGES on this CD

The TARGET drive should be formated, but should not contain any files and SHOULD NOT be bootable

Select TARGET hard drive for installation

(C)Drive C (and possibly D) would be used if the MasterCD is inserted in a CD drive on the Target System
(D)
(E)Drive E, F, G, and H would be used if doing an Interlink Transfer from a Master System to the Target System. Check the monitor on the Master System to determine which drive (from the perspective of the Master System) is mapped to the C: drive on the Target System

Once the files are copied over, if you are installing Win95A or Win95B you will be asked if you want to copy the Windows installation (CAB) files to the drive (requires 32mb of space for Win95a, or 56mb of space for Win95b). This is important for a Computer Refurbishing operation, because frequently we receive donations which do not include a CD Rom drive, because the donor either removed it to use it for his replacement computer, or they came from a corporate donation where each machine was not required to have its own CD because they were connected to a Local Area Network, and we need some way to easily get the necessary drivers (which would be on the install CD, however without a CD drive you can't read an install CD) once the computer is finally hooked up to the monitor, printer, and other devices it will use. At that point the CAB files can be removed to free up the disk space they require.

Once the CAB file copying has finished, remove any disk from the A: drive and reboot the system. If the system does not boot, you should boot from a floppy containing the operating system of the image and use the SYS C: command to make the drive bootable.

Alternative Installation Procedures

HOW TO USE AN "IMAGE" FILE TO SET UP A DRIVE

Images files are created from systems where the operating system and all software have already been installed and configured. When the image is restored to a new disk it duplicates the configuration of the original system. This greatly reduce the time required to install and setup software and insures uniform configurations and performance.

PREPARATION PROCEDURES FOR DOS & WINDOWS 3.1, 95

Prepare the Hard drive on the new computer (referred to as the REMOTE or SERVER), being sure to format it and make it bootable with the appropriate operating system (FORMAT C: /S) if you will use DOS or Win3.1. DO NOT make it bootable if you will use Win95.

METHOD 1, LAPLINK

NOTE!! Your hard drive must have space for both the image files and the expanded system to use this method. Read the !README.TXT to find the space requirements for each system and add that to image file size to find total space required to use this method. After you have restored an image you will be able to erase the image files from the new computer to free up drive space.

Make a LAPLINK CONNECTION, see procedure below.

Using LHARC IMAGES - Copy the image file (file has the extension .LZH) from the CD to C:\ on the REMOTE.

Copy the file LHARC.EXE from the CD to C:\ on the REMOTE.

Quit LAPLINK

On the REMOTE, from the C:\ prompt:
-type LHARC X /A2 <image>
-press ENTER

Where <image> is the name of the .LZH image file.

When the restore is complete refer to either DOS/WIN3.1 STARTUP or 95 STARTUP on how to restart.

Be sure to erase the files LHARC.EXE and the .LZH image files from C:\.

**MAKING A LAPLINK CONNECTION** Connect a LAPLINK/INTERLINK parallel cable to the LPT1 printer port on each machine.

*REMOTE SETUP*
Copy the program LL3.EXE to C:\ on the NEW computer (referred to as the REMOTE)
Boot the REMOTE and run LL3, use OPTIONS to choose PARALLEL, LPT1

*LOCAL SETUP*
Copy the program LL3.EXE to C:\ on the ORIGINAL computer (referred to as the LOCAL).
Boot the LOCAL and run LL3, use OPTIONS to choose PARALLEL, LPT1

LAPLINK should connect and show directories on both machines.

METHOD 2, INTERLINK

Using LHARC IMAGES - Copy the image file (file has the extension .LZH) From the CD to C:\ on the CLIENT.

Copy the file LHARC.EXE from the CD to C:\ on the CLIENT.

Make an INTERLINK CONNECTION, see procedure below.

On the CLIENT, from the C:\ prompt:
-type LHARC X /A2 <image> :\
-press ENTER

Where <image> is the name of the .LZH image file and is the drive letter for the remapped drive on the SERVER.

When the restore is complete refer to either DOS/WIN3.1 STARTUP or 95 STARTUP on how to restart.

Be sure to erase the files LHARC.EXE and the .LZH image files from C:\.

MAKING A INTERLINK CONNECTION

Connect a LAPLINK/INTERLINK parallel cable to the LPT1 printer port on each machine.

SERVER SETUP

Boot the NEW computer from the INTERLINK BOOT disk if you have one and choose SERVER, or you can copy the program INTERSVR.EXE to C:\ on the NEW computer (referred to as the SERVER)

Boot the SERVER to the C:> prompt
-type INTERSVR
-press ENTER

CLIENT SETUP

You must have or make a INTERLINK BOOT disk, see the CD folder \IMAGES\BOOTDISK to make one.

Boot the CLIENT computer from the INTERLINK BOOT disk and choose CLIENT.

Interlink should confirm the connection and remap the drives on the SERVER with new drive letters. Make note of the SERVER hard disk letter, since you will need to use this drive letter when restoring.

METHODS, OTHER

Some variants of the above two methods can be used, here are some ideas.

1. Make a INTERLINK boot/setup disk for the CLIENT (ORIGINAL) computer, including the DOS CDROM drivers. Use the INTERLINK CONNECTION PROCEDURE above, then chnge to the root directory/folder on the CD drive on the CLIENT, type IMAGES and press ENTER.

2. Make a boot/setup disk for the ORIGINAL computer, including the DOS CDROM drivers. Replace the original C: drive with the new drive & make it bootable. Copy the image & LHARC.EXE files from the CD to the drive and procede as outlined above.

3. Install the NEW drive as the second hard drive in the original system and format it. DO NOT MAKE IT BOOTABLE. Copy the image & LHARC.EXE files from the CD to the drive and procede as outlined above.

Make SURE SURE SURE you are restoring to the second drive letter or you will overwrite your C: drive. After the restore remove the new drive and install it in the NEW machine as the C: drive. Boot the NEW system from the A: drive with the correct operating system boot disk and use the command SYS C: to install the operating system.

DOS/WIN3.1 STARTUP

After the restore is complete, remove any disk from A: and restart the computer. If it does not boot, boot the system from the A: drive with the correct operating system boot disk and use the command SYS C: to install the operating system. Remove the disk from A: & reboot.

95 STARTUP

After the restore is complete, remove any disk form the A: drive and reboot from C:. If it does not boot, boot the system from the A: drive with the correct operating system boot disk and use the command SYS C: to install the operating system. Remove the disk from A: & reboot.

When you are prompted to restore long file names answer YES.
