Happy New Year Virus
APCUG Director Peter Hess warns us to
beware of email messages with "Happy New Year" in the subject line with an
attachment named "Christmas.exe". There is a good chance they are the
Win32/Maldal.C worm that spreads via Microsoft Outlook that masquerades as Christmas greetings.
It is also known as W32/Zacker.C, W32/Maldal.C, and Win32.Reeezak. There is an even worse version
called Maldal.D that was released on Dec 28, and Maldal.E came out on Dec 29, Maldal.G was
announced by Jan 3, and still more versions are coming out.
APCUG Advisor Ira Wilsker provided additional information
on Maldal.D and notified us that
America Online (AOL) confirmed that there is a security
hole in the latest versions of its AOL Instant
Messenger (AIM) chat program, corroborating the
findings released by an independent security group
Wednesday. AOL will fix the problem by the end of the week.
